INC. ANNOUNCES SECOND QUARTER 2006 RESULTS
FREMONT, Calif.,
July 26, 2006— Mattson Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: MTSN),
a leading supplier of advanced process equipment used to manufacture semiconductors,
today
announced results for the second quarter ended
July 2, 2006.
Highlights of this report include:
- Increased bookings 28 percent quarter-over-quarter
- Won large order for new SupremaTM strip system and shipped first Helios process evaluation tool to a leading Japanese NAND flash manufacturer
- Shipped first Atmos RTP system to Korean memory chipmaker
- Received orders from 4 of the top 5 top cap ex spenders
Net sales for the current quarter were $63.3 million, up 8.4 percent from $58.4 million for the previous quarter, and up 5.0 percent from $60.3 million in the second quarter of 2005. Net sales for the second quarter of 2006 and 2005 included royalties of $3.8 million and $6.8 million, respectively, related to the settlement of the patent infringement suit with Dainippon Screen Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (“DNS”). Net income for the current quarter was $5.2 million, or $0.10 per diluted share, compared with $3.7 million, or $0.07 per share, for the previous quarter, and $6.8 million, or $0.13 per share, for the second quarter of 2005.
Gross margin for the current quarter was 40.5 percent, down 0.7 percentage points from 41.2 percent for the previous quarter, and down 3.8 percentage points from 44.3 percent for the second quarter of 2005. Operating expenses for the current quarter decreased to $21.1 million from $21.6 million for the previous quarter and were $0.8 million higher than the $20.3 million reported for the second quarter of 2005. Operating expenses as a percentage of net sales were 33.4 percent for the current quarter, compared with 36.9 percent for the previous quarter and 33.7 percent in the second quarter of 2005.
Shipment revenues for the current quarter were $59.8 million, essentially flat with $60.7 million for the previous quarter, and up 14.6 percent from $52.2 million for the second quarter of 2005. Net bookings for the current quarter were $73.0 million, up 27.8 percent from $57.1 million for the previous quarter, and up 174.4 percent from $26.6 million for the second quarter of 2005. Net bookings in the current quarter resulted in a book-to-bill ratio of 1.22. Deferred revenues (which represents unrecognized revenues and pre-paid royalties received from DNS) were $15.6 million at the end of the current quarter, compared with $12.7 million at the end of the previous quarter, and $20.8 million at the end of the second quarter of 2005.
Cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments at the end of the current quarter were $131.0 million, up $3.0 million from $128.0 million at the end of the prior quarter, and up $1.7 million from $129.3 million at the end of 2005.
