| MATTSON TECHNOLOGY DELAYS FOURTH QUARTER EARNINGS ANNOUNCEMENT
FREMONT, Calif. — January 27, 1999 — Mattson
Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MTSN) announced today that it will
delay announcement of its results for the fourth quarter
of 1998 and the year then ended. The Company explained that
the delay is a result of the recent SEC comments regarding
accounting for acquisition-related to in-process research
and development. As previously announced, in connection with
the Company's acquisition of Concept Systems Design in July
1998, the Company wrote off in process R&D of approximately
$5.8 million. The Company has not received any inquiry from
the SEC regarding this matter, but has determined to take
a proactive stance and delay the release of financial results
until it can complete the work required to determine the
effect, if any, that these comments will have on the Company's
previously reported results.
The Company believes that write-off of in-process R&D
which it has taken to date was made in accordance with established
industry practice at the time. In addition, this write-off
was based upon a valuation provided by an independent appraiser.
The Company expects to announce its final operating results
for 1998 and the fourth quarter of 1998 at 2:00 PM Pacific
Standard Time on February 10, 1999.
